High blood pressure, diuretics and stress

Two recent studies show that ‘water pills’ and stress management techniques are at least as effective as other means of controlling high blood pressure.

According to Chinese medicine, there are two possible reasons for high blood pressure. One is be caused by a condition called ‘Excessive Water.’ In the case of high blood pressure, this can be taken literally: there is an excess of water in the body. Diuretics, by eliminating some of the water, automatically decrease blood pressure.

Although excess water can be responsible for high blood pressure, the reason for the excess water is low heart energy. According to Chinese medicine, when heart energy is low, water can accumulate in the body.

Now, stress decreases heart energy. Stress, therefore, keeps high blood pressure high — and also explains why stress management helps control high blood pressure.
