Researchers believe that mental, physical and sexual activity can help ward off dementia and other degenerative diseases because they stimulate new brain cells.
According to Chinese medicine, mental health depends on heart energy. Both mental and physical activity increase heart energy, so they can, indeed, help ward off dementia and the like, providing they’re done according to one’s abilities. Over-exertion diminishes heart energy, which is likely to lead to diminished mental ability.
Unlike mental and physical activity, sexual activity decreases heart energy (especially in men). Increasing sexual activity just for the sake of warding off dementia will, in fact, have the opposite effect.
This doesn’t mean that sex should be avoided, only that it requires some caution. Our body knows when it’s fit for sexual activity and when it needs a break, and this is something that must be respected. If sexual activity causes physical discomfort, such as fatigue, lower back pain, dizziness, etc., it’s time to rest until the body recuperates.
