A recent article discusses research on the effects of too much sleep.
According to Chinese medicine, sleep is related to heart energy. Too much or too little sleep affects the heart, and too much or too little heart energy affects sleep.
The actual amount of sleep we need changes from person to person and from season to season. Some people do very well with five to six hours of sleep a night, while others need a good ten hours. We generally sleep longer when the nights are longer, in cold weather and cold climates, and in northern regions. The opposite is true as well: we generally sleep less when the days are longer, in warm weather and warm climates, and in southern regions. And, of course, activity also influences the amount of sleep each of us requires.
